Export your design

Choose artboards, export size, units, DPI, file format, and background options before downloading a design from Kittl.

There are two ways to get a design out of the editor: Quick Export for a fast download of a selection, and the full Export panel when you need control over size, DPI, file format, color, or transparency. Which one to use depends on where the file is going.

Before you start

Remove background and Optimize quality are premium features.

Use Quick Export for a single element

Use Quick Export when you already know what you need and don't need to adjust technical settings.

  1. Select an individual object, a grouped design, or a whole artboard. Your selection determines what gets exported.

  2. Click the Quick Export icon in the contextual toolbar above your selection.

  3. Choose a file type from the Format dropdown:

    • PNG: transparent graphics, logos, and digital assets

    • JPEG: photos and flattened images without transparency

    • SVG: scalable logos and vector graphics; DPI doesn't apply

    • PDF: print layouts and file handoffs

    • MP4: video exports

  4. For PNG, JPEG, or PDF, pick a Size: 1×, 2×, or 3×. 1× uses the current pixel dimensions; 2× and 3× produce a larger export.

  5. Click Export.

Need more control, such as a specific DPI or color profile? When you've selected a whole artboard, the Quick Export popup includes an Advanced Settings link that jumps straight to the full Export panel for that artboard. This link isn't available when you've selected an individual object or group; for those, open the full Export panel separately if you need more options.

Open the Export panel

Use the full Export panel when you need control over size, DPI, color, transparency, or quality. Click Export in the top right of the editor to open it.

Choose which artboards to export

  1. Click the artboard dropdown at the top of the panel.

  2. Select all artboards, or tick individual ones from the list.

Set the export size

  1. Enter the width (W) and height (H) values for your export. These use whatever unit your project is set to (pixels, inches, or millimetres). To change the unit, use the menu icon in the top left of the editor, then Settings.

  2. Enter a DPI value. Use a higher DPI, such as 300, for print, and a lower DPI for digital use. DPI doesn't apply to SVG.

Below the DPI field, the panel shows the resulting pixel size for your export, for example "Export size: 1146 px x 1852 px." If you selected multiple artboards of different sizes, this reads "Mix x Mix" instead, since each artboard exports at its own size.

Pick a file format and color profile

  1. Choose a file format from the format dropdown. PNG and JPEG work well for digital use; SVG and PDF are better suited to print.

  2. Under Color, choose a color profile: RGB, for web and screens, or CMYK, for print.

RGB is available for every file format. CMYK is only available for PDF and JPEG, since it's built for print. PNG and SVG always export in RGB, so if you need a transparent file for print, export a PNG in RGB, or use CMYK PDF or JPEG for color-accurate, non-transparent print files.

You still design in RGB. When you choose CMYK, the file is converted automatically at export using a standard print color profile, so nothing changes about how you work in the editor.

When you select CMYK, a Printed colors may vary notice appears, letting you know that printed colors can look different than on screen depending on printer and paper, with a Learn more link if you want details. This is expected, since converting from RGB to CMYK can shift some colors, particularly bright or neon ones. Check Don't show again if you don't want to see the notice again, then click Got It to continue.

Adjust background and quality

  1. Under Additional settings, turn on Remove background for a transparent export.

  2. Turn on Optimize quality to improve image output.

Export your design

  1. Click Export.

  2. If you selected a single artboard, the file downloads on its own. If you selected multiple artboards, they download together as a zip folder.

Expected outcome

Your file, or zip folder, saves to your computer's downloads folder. A single artboard export uses the file name format [project name] - [artboard name]; exporting multiple artboards names the zip folder after the project instead.

Troubleshooting

My exported file has a white background instead of being transparent

Turn on Remove background in the Export panel, and remove or disable any texture overlays on your design. Textures apply to the whole design, so they'll cover a transparent background too.

Elements outside my artboard aren't in the export

Only elements clipped to an artboard are included in an export. Drag any missing elements inside the artboard boundary, or check that Clip content is turned on for that artboard.

My video downloaded at a different size than I set

A video that isn't placed inside an artboard exports at its original size instead of the width and height you entered. This is expected: scaling a video up would make it blurry, since it's not a resizable vector file. Place the video on an artboard if you want your export size to apply.

My CMYK export is failing or taking a long time

Very large or highly detailed designs can struggle to convert to CMYK. If a CMYK export doesn't complete, try exporting a smaller selection with Quick Export, lowering the DPI, or exporting in RGB instead.

Common questions

Should I use Quick Export or the full Export panel?

Use Quick Export when you just need a fast download of one element or artboard and don't need to change technical settings. Use the full Export panel when you're preparing a file for print, need a specific size or DPI, want to switch between RGB and CMYK, or need additional settings like Optimize quality, Remove background, or combining multiple artboards into one PDF.

Why can't I select CMYK for my file?

CMYK is only available for PDF and JPEG exports. PNG and SVG always export in RGB.

What's the maximum export size?

On the Free plan, PNG and JPEG exports are capped at 800 px at 72 DPI. Pro, Expert, and Max plans raise that limit to 10,800 px at 300 DPI. SVG exports are vector, so they scale to whatever width and height you set instead of having a fixed pixel cap. PDF exports can include raster content too, so the same limits may apply depending on what's in your design.

On mobile browsers, exports are capped at 4,096 x 4,096 px regardless of plan. This is a device limitation, not a plan restriction, so switch to a desktop browser if you need a larger export.
