Apply text decoration effects
Apply text decoration effects, change their color, and fine-tune weight or distance to add stronger typographic contrast.
Text decoration effects add patterned outlines, cut-outs, and line treatments to your text, giving you stronger typographic contrast without leaving the Text panel.
Apply a decoration effect
Select any text on your artboard. The right panel opens automatically.
In the right panel, click the plus icon next to Text Decoration to add it.
Choose a style and adjust it
Click one of the four style icons to switch decoration styles: Horizontal Lines, Color Cut, Oblique Lines, or Fading Color Cut.
Click the color swatch to open the color picker and set the effect's color and opacity.
Use the Weight and Distance sliders to fine-tune the look of your decoration.
Remove a decoration
Click the minus icon next to Text Decoration. This removes the effect and collapses the section back to a plus icon.
Expected outcome
Your selected text shows the decoration effect and updates live as you adjust the color, weight, and distance.
Troubleshooting
I can't see the decoration effect I applied
Check that Weight and Distance aren't both set too low, since a very thin or close decoration can be hard to spot. Also check the effect color has enough contrast with your text and background, low-contrast colors are easy to miss.
Common questions
Does the decoration effect apply to my whole text box or just the characters I select?
It always applies to the whole text box, even if you've only highlighted a single character when you add it. You can still style individual characters (font, weight, size, and so on) within a decorated text box. See Edit and style text for how character-level styling works alongside effects like this one.
Can I combine a decoration effect with a text shadow or a transformation?
Yes. Decoration effects stack cleanly with text shadow effects and text transformations, so you can curve, shadow, and decorate the same text box at once.
Is this feature available on every plan?
Yes, text decoration effects aren't gated to a specific plan.
