Use margins

Add, adjust, lock, and snap to artboard margins so text and design elements stay balanced, readable, and print-aware.

Margins mark a safe zone inside your artboard so text and design elements stay clear of the edges. Turn them on any time you want consistent spacing across a design, a template, or a piece headed to print.

Before you start

Margins are available on every plan, including Free.

Turn on margins

Set margin values

  1. With margins on, an even width is applied to all four sides, set to eight percent of your artboard's shortest side.

  2. Enter a custom value for the top, right, bottom, or left margin individually. The maximum is 40 percent of your artboard's shortest side, no matter which unit you're working in. The minimum depends on the unit, 1px in pixel-based projects, or 0.01 in inch-based projects.

  3. Click the link icon to update all four sides together, or unlink it to set each side on its own.

  4. Margin values follow your project's measurement unit, in pixels, inches, or millimetres. Change the unit from the menu icon, then Settings.

Snap objects to margins

As you move or resize an object, it snaps to your margins automatically, so it's easy to keep content inside the safe zone without measuring by eye.

Expected outcome

Your margins for the selected artboard appear as a purple dotted line inside its edges, and objects snap to that line as you work. The margin lines themselves are a visual guide only, they don't appear in your exported or printed file.

Troubleshooting

My margin value snapped to a different number than what I typed

Margin values are clamped to a valid range. The maximum is 40 percent of your artboard's shortest side, no matter the unit. If you type something higher, it drops to that maximum. The minimum is 1px in pixel-based projects or 0.01 in inch-based projects, so anything lower or zero bumps back up to that floor.

I can't see my margin's guide line on the canvas

Two separate switches both need to be on: the Margin section in the right panel for that specific artboard, and the global Margin toggle under the menu icon, then View. If either one is off, the line won't show.

My margin values changed after I switched units

This is expected. Margin values follow your project's measurement unit, so switching from pixels to inches or millimetres converts the numbers you see, it doesn't change the actual margin.

Common questions

Can I turn margins off without losing my values?

It depends on how you turn them off. Hiding margins from the menu icon's View flyout is just a visibility switch, your values stay put on each artboard. Removing margins from the right panel clears them, so adding margins back on that artboard starts over with the default width.

Which plans include margins?

All of them. Margins are available on Free, Pro, Expert, and Max.

Can I set a different margin width for each side?

Yes. Unlink the four fields in the right panel using the link icon, then enter a different value for the top, right, bottom, and left margin.

Can I set different margins on different artboards?

Yes. Margins are set per artboard, so each one in your project can have its own values.
